27 week check up with the midwives

Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand On Tandem Stroller
Joovy Caboose "Sit n Stand" stroller
On this beautiful day, my midwife and one of her assistants visited my home for my 27 week check up. They had a home visit with another mama in Janesville, so it was more convenient to meet at my house on the way back. Fine with me! It was quite different having them in my territory rather than meeting at their office. Of course, my spunky and love-able Jack Russel, Enzo, greeted them excitedly at the front door. Digging his nose into their bags and jumping all over them. Gotta love him! Also, UPS decided to deliver our double stroller during my exam. My midwife, Debbie, was so helpful and fetched the HUGE box and hauled it inside, while the other midwife, Lovesta, attended to me. Midwives do everything! Haha. I can’t wait to put the stroller together. Thank you to my in-laws for this generous gift!

Compression stockings
We talked about my sexy varicose veins forming on my legs, my sore and heavy "V", and aching feet. Nothing to hide here! As for the varicose veins, they're pregnancy induced. A few weeks ago they started appearing like a bruise on my upper thigh, under my butt. I remember having a "bruise like" varicose vein spot with my first pregnancy, so I thought this would be similar and it went away after Tucker was born. Turns out it's getting worse and spreading down my legs. I'm a spider! Ick! Honestly, I am really bothered by these, as I am only 26 and a fairly petite person. They are most likely going to fade after the baby is born, but probably won’t go away completely. Sad. Fortunately, there are items like pregnancy compression stockings out there. I've never been a fan of panty hose, but I'll do whatever it takes to prevent these from getting any worse. Should be delightful to wear on those hot summer days! Haha.

Prenatal V2 Cradle
Prenatal Cradle V2 SupporterAs for the "V" issues, for weeks now I've been really sore down there and have a ton of pressure when I squat to pick up something or sit on the toilet. I most likely have some varicose veins down there as well. Lovely. It's also about twice the size! Awesome. The weight of the baby is really creating a lot of pressure on the lower half of my body. I'm looking into getting a prenatal V2 cradle belt. It looks like a pair of panties with two belt like supporters that go over your butt. SO sexy, NOT! Hopefully these items, though bothersome, will help me get through the rest of the pregnancy pain free. Thankfully, no back pain or any other issues. No secrets here ladies! Pregnancy, although amazing, can really be hard on your body. So don't think you're "weird" for having these sorts of ailments.

As for the sweet baby girl, she's doing great! About 1 week ago, she started moving around a lot more. Sometimes the movements are so strong, that I gasp or brace myself. So awesome! This is my favorite part about pregnancy. Depending on where she's positioned, like on my bladder, I have to pee 3-4 times/hour! Or sometimes she's up higher and I have shortness of breath. Other times, it feels like my belly is going to explode! All signs of a healthy growing baby. I love my baby belly :)

The midwives felt around my belly, trying to figure out where she's positioned. The gentle pushing/pressing was a little uncomfortable for me because my lower belly muscles were tight. They decided to not continue because of my discomfort. Debbie suggested that I get a pregnancy massage to help loosen up the muscles. Sweet! Now I can tell Zach, my husband, that I NEED a massage because my midwife told me so. Hehe. Anyway, we still have plenty of time to figure out the baby's position. The heart beat sounded great and I measured at 28cm.

We talked about some birth prep, like where the birthing pool will go. It will be in our living room. I just want to make sure our windows are well covered. So I'll have extra sheets or blankets ready to hang up over the curtains. I've also decided to have my friend Megan, be my doula! She's almost done with her doula certification and needs to attend one more birth to be certified. Plus she only lives about 5-7min away! So excited!

I'm officially in my 3rd trimester and start meeting with my midwives every two weeks! Yay!

23 week prenatal check up with my midwife

I had my 23 week check up with my midwife today. I was hoping to drop off Tucker at my mom's house, but that didn't work out, so I brought him with. For the most part, he entertained him self with toys. But then gained an interest in a lamp by throwing blocks up aiming for the light bulb. Ahhh love that kid ;) My midwife tried to involve him in the appointment by having him help with the fetal heart rate monitor and the measuring of my belly. He was a big helper and felt proud of himself. At one point I saw him lean his ear in to hear the heart beat.

The babies heart rate was good and strong; in the 150's. My belly measured pretty much right at 23cm. We talked about seafood and what is considered to be safe to eat during pregnancy. She recommended the Monterey Bay aquarium website for choosing the best seafood:  http://apps.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=1540

We also talked about ways to involve Tucker with the new baby. My fear is that he will feel 2nd and separated from us, especially during breastfeeding. She said from her experience, the first child will start to grow up real fast and become more independent. Simply because I physically won't be able to do as much, for example, by having him put his shoes on by himself and such. I can also encourage him that he is my big boy and how special that is. I can involve him by asking him to get diapers for me or rub the babies leg while I'm nursing her. Just some examples that made me feel more at ease.

We briefly spoke of post par-tum care for our newborn and what possible injections and/or drugs will be administered. I was informed that the ointment that hospitals put in the newborn's eyes after delivery is an antibiotic used to treat any possible STD's the mother may have. I have the right to opt out of this, especially since I'm 100% sure I don't have an STD. I remember Tucker having this "gunk" in his eyes after the delivery and I felt sorry for him :( The other thing administered is Vitamin K. Vitamin K is needed for blood clotting. Babies are born with small amounts of this which can RARELY(1 and 10,000) lead to Haemorrhagic Disease. This injection is used as a preventive. Typically hospitals will administer this by injection. My midwife informed me of an oral option that could be given to the baby a few times for the first few weeks of life.Or, we can opt out of this as well. Something to think about.

I mentioned that I'm expecting to go early with his baby, as I did with Tucker. That hope was quickly dashed as she informed me that many of her mamas-to-be sometimes go late with their seconds! Ugh! We'll have to see....

For my next appointment, my midwife will be coming to my house. How fun!

Afterwards, Tucker and I headed to a resale store called Simply Savvy in Madison. I heard that they carried  maternity and baby clothes, so I thought I'd check it out. I ended up finding a cute red dress for myself and a couple nice blouses. I also picked up a few Zutano outfits for my baby girl. Great deals!

Pictures taken by my midwife, Debbie.

And everyone goes "awww..."
